Perspectives on Social Housing
Social housing has shaped the lives of millions in the UK, offering shelter, stability, community, and, at times, struggle. It emerged in response to poor housing conditions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, evolving through council estates, housing associations, and cooperative living. Yet, its purpose has been contested, seen as both a public good and, more recently, a sector subject to market forces, the rise of the corporate not so ‘social’ social landlords and government neglect.
SHAC was launched by the Unite Housing Workers Branch and exists to challenge housing inequality and injustice, originally in the social housing sector. It brings together tenants, leaseholders, and shared owners to fight housing injustice from across the spectrum.
We campaign for fair treatment, decent conditions, tenant rights, and genuine resident participation. We hold landlords and policymakers to account, fighting against the erosion of secure, affordable homes and landlord mistreatment.
We also support, appreciate and want to celebrate all that is positive, accessible and essential about social housing.
The Exhibition
This exhibition is an opportunity to explore what social housing has meant, and continues to mean, to you and all those who live in it. We want to collect and share stories, images, and creative expressions that reflect the diverse realities of social housing, both the positives and the struggles. We want to hear the personal memories and experiences that shape the lives of people living in social housing.
We welcome contributions from anyone with a connection to social housing, whether you live in, grew up in, or work in social housing. This is a chance to challenge stereotypes, reclaim narratives, and highlight why social housing matters now more than ever.
Join us in bringing this exhibition to life. Tell your story. Share your perspective. Make social housing visible.
