 Read Here Notting Hill Genesis Protest and Press Coverage After the death of four-month old baby Akram Mohammed in a mould-ridden Notting Hill Genesis (NHG) property, SHAC and the Unite Housing Workers Branch jointly organised a protest outside NHG’s head office on 6th June 2025. Akram’s family joined us and everyone present was moved by their plight. The action’s aims were twofold: firstly to stand in solidarity with Akram’s family, and secondly to highlight that too many people still have to endure similar conditions, despite the wealth of their landlords.  People’s Assembly Anti-Austerity Protest: Housing Bloc Thanks to all SHAC members who joined the housing bloc on the People’s Assembly demo on 7th June. The march included many trade unions as well as community organisations and campaign groups protesting against cuts to welfare services and benefits. One of the main triggers for protestors was the cruel Winter Fuel Payment cut that affected many older people who cannot afford to heat their homes. This has now largely been reversed by government. |
 End Service Charge Abuse – National Audit Office Response In March, the Public Interest Law Centre (PILC), acting under instruction from SHAC, presented a bundle of evidence to the National Audit Office (NAO). We asked them to launch an investigation into service charge abuse relating to welfare payments covering inaccurate or extortionate service charges. Our action was supported by Mohammed Yasin and 25 other MPs. Last week, the NAO replied saying they would not launch an investigation. Their reason was mainly because service charge abuse was a matter for regulation. Incredibly, they also referenced the Housing Ombudsman’s call for government to set up a national tenants and residents body, mimicking SHAC’s project to establish a National Tenants and Residents Union which launched earlier this year.  Download the Report SHAC and Other Campaign Groups Contribute to Greater London Authority Housing Report The Greater London Authority (GLA) has published research entitled “Worry and stress: Life as a Leaseholder in London”. SHAC was invited to give evidence as part of the data collection. We highlighted in particular the problems associated with service charges, and managed to persuade the GLA to include reference to tenants who also pay a separate service charge in addition to rent. The report makes nine recommendations for action by the London Mayor primarily focussing on strengthening their service charge charter, but also includes some measures (such as enhancing renters’ rights) which will be matters for government lobbying. |
