New Video – Jakia on the Battle With Tower Hamlets Community Housing (THCH) Our members are challenging their landlords with help and support from SHAC. By showing what can be done, we can inspire others and draw them into our community. In this video SHAC member Jakia speaks about the battle that she and her neighbours have had with their landlord over services and charges. They have protested, met their MPs and councillors, withheld unjustified payments, made representations to the Regulator of Social Housing, and spoken out at council meetings. End Service Charge Abuse – Updates and in the News After our legal partners at the Public Interest Law Centre (PILC) submitted the bundle of evidence on service charge abuse to the National Audit Office (NAO), we wrote to the NAO suggesting a meeting with SHAC to go through the documents. This has now been passed to one of their directors and we await a response. In the meantime, SHAC and our members have appeared in more articles, all of which helps to expose how widespread this financial abuse has become. Further media coverage is in the pipeline, so please keep liking and sharing! National Tenants and Residents Union (NTRU) – Inclusion London Endorsement We are delighted to announce that campaign partners Inclusion London have endorsed SHAC’s project to build a national tenants’ and residents’ union. Involving them from the start helps to ensure that any union is fully inclusive for disabled people. Inclusion London will also be speaking about their housing work at a future SHAC meeting. With the recent addition of Causeway Farm Residents to the list of tenants and residents associations (TRAs), we now have the backing of ten groups and 42 TRAs. If you are a TRA member, please ask them to add their support too. Find out more and sign up here. |
Interviewee Call Out – Renters with Service Charges We have a number of press contacts who would like to speak to renters who pay a separate service charge and who have experienced large increases. Interviews can be anonymous. If you fit the profile, please email shac.action@gmail.com with details of your landlord, your postcode, and your service charge increase. It is also helpful to include a brief description of the impact service charge rises have had on your household finances. |
Housing Protest: 11am, Wednesday 26th March, Parliament Housing coalition Homes for All is inviting everyone to join a housing protest and lobby of Parliament. The coalition, which includes SHAC, is calling for government action to ease the housing crisis such as rent controls and mass council house building, fully funded through a wealth tax. You can download the flyer here. |
![]() Join Nextdoor Nextdoor Network Posting a message on the Nextdoor app is one great way to encourage tenants and residents from your landlord (or other housing associations) to join SHAC and build critical strength. Nextdoor is a Facebook-style social networking site that links people in the same locality. You can find out more and get set up here. Some of our members have been very successful in using it to raise awareness of SHAC’s work, in one case getting 1,800 views for a single post, and recruiting neighbours who are also residents of her landlord. |
