 SHAC Article: Social Housing Antisocial Behaviour Crisis SHAC’s Dean Kennedy’s article explains that despite falling national statistics in police-reported anti-social behaviour (ASB), social housing tenants continue to suffer disproportionately, and housing associations are persistently failing to act – even in cases where they are found at fault by the Housing Ombudsman. “We are witnessing a two-tier system of justice” said a representative for tenant advocacy group Voices for Housing Justice. “Private residents may call the police, but social tenants are directed to their housing providers – and those providers often fail to act.” The Housing Ombudsman has repeatedly found housing associations to be at fault for their handling of ASB complaints, citing failures in investigation, support for victims and communication.  Join Here Sanctuary Housing Sanctuary Housing is one of the biggest social landlords in the UK. They provide housing support services in almost every council across England, but their track record as a landlord is woeful. SHAC regularly receives complaints about overcharging, disrepairs, and failure to address anti-social behaviour from Sanctuary tenants and residents.  Join Here Tenants & Residents of Private Corporate Landlords and Managing Agents Although SHAC began life empowering those in social housing association properties, we have a growing membership among those in homes owned by private corporate landlords, or whose managing agents are problematic. We have set up our first WhatsApp community specifically for tenants and residents in this category.  Free Leaseholders and the Battle for Rights Harry Scoffin and our partners at Free Leaseholders have watched in court as a group of freeholders try to prevent government from reforming new laws that would give leaseholders more rights. The freeholder group of landlords who brought the judicial challenge argue and claim that checking what they do with their properties is a breach of their human rights. It is the ultimate ‘lawfare’ against residents objecting to the wild west of service charging and other abuses. Harry reports here – please share. |

Faced with a managing agent who continued to overcharge while delivering next to nothing, she didn’t just complain — she took control. Amber and her neighbours sacked their management company, set up a resident-run organisation, and reclaimed control over their building. Ben and Amber discuss how she legally removed the agent, what it took to start managing the block themselves, the support now available to help others do the same, and whether this is a more powerful alternative to a service charge strike.
