![]() SHAC in The Big Issue & Property118: The Need for a National Housing Union The Big Issue magazine invited SHAC to discuss housing sector prospects in 2026. We focussed on the need to reshape the crisis landscape by building tenant and resident power through the National Housing Union project. Read here. The project aims to unite renters, shared owners, and leaseholders, whether they rent from councils, housing associations, or private companies, and to address the issues that are creating so many problems. The concept of tenant and resident power seems to have rattled their readers – see the comments below the article. |
![]() To popularise the idea of a national housing union, we have created a set of social media graphics for members to share and which highlight campaign demands. The issues range from rent controls to disrepairs, from student accommodation to retirement homes, and from ending disability discrimination to extending Legal Aid to housing claims. The graphics will be posted monthly throughout the year. The first focuses on the need for genuinely affordable housing. Please like and share … Bluesky ~ Facebook ~ Insta ~ Twitter |
![]() End Service Charge Abuse: SHAC to Meet Layla Moran MP The MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, Layla Moran (pictured), spoke in Parliament last year about service charge hikes and inaccuracies by housing association GreenSquareAccord. We wrote to Layla asking her to meet with SHAC, and asked members to do likewise. The call to action was successful, and Layla wrote back to say that she had received many emails from our members. Thank you! On Friday 9th January, we will meet with her office and ask for her to champion the idea of new legislation which allows disputed service charges to be paid to the courts instead of the landlord, with the landlord having to prove legitimacy before payments are passed on. We will report back after the meeting. See the campaign here. |
![]() Our next monthly SHAC meeting will hear updates on all our campaigns and is open to all members. It is an opportunity for you to share any campaigns or actions you are organising to challenge bad practice by your landlord. Please join us: 6.30pm, Thursday 29th January 2026 Zoom Link ~ Passcode: 459809 Add the appointment to your calendar here. |

![]() Nextdoor Network – Recruit to SHAC Join Nextdoor Posting a message on the Nextdoor app is one great way to encourage tenants and residents from your landlord (or other housing associations) to join SHAC and build critical strength. It will help to raise awareness of SHAC’s work and to encourage more recruits to lobby the Government and get our voices heard. Nextdoor is a Facebook-style social networking site that links people in the same locality. You can find out more and get set up here. |
