 SHAC on BBC Radio SussexArun District Council Disrepairs In August 2025, a Regulatory Judgement was published which condemned Arun Council for severe failings in relation to its tenants and residents. This included around 2,500 open and overdue repairs cases, nearly 1,000 overdue fire risk assessment remedial actions, and over half of its homes not even fitted with smoke detectors. SHAC was invited onto BBC Radio Sussex to comment on the judgement. We made it known that these problems had not developed overnight. We explained that, as well as shocking under-investment in council housing, this situation is a damning indictment of the whole way that social housing is regulated, with a chasm lying between the laws on the statute books and the ability of tenants and residents to enforce them.  Government Housing Consultations The Ministry of Housing, Communities, and Local Government has several open consultations relating to housing (see all here). They include a consultation on proposals to implement aspects of the Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act, specifically leasehold service charges (here), closing on the 26th September. There is also a consultation on reforming the Decent Homes Standard for social and privately rented homes (here) which closes on the 10th September. |

 Sign Here Please share: Bluesky ~ Twitter ~ Facebook ~ Instagram Parliamentary Petition: Service Charges SHAC is lobbying MPs asking them to support legal reforms and to highlight service charge abuse in Parliament. As part of this, we have launched a Parliamentary petition demanding legal changes to allow disputed service charges to be paid to the courts and only passed onto landlords if they can prove the legitimacy of the bills. Otherwise, the money is returned to the tenant or resident. To get this in place, it is not enough to just sign the petition, we need everyone to share it in their networks: friends, tenant and resident groups, colleagues at work, within your trade union, and across any social media platforms you use. |
