![]() Read More Here New SHAC Article Neither Shared Nor Ownership: Protesting at the London Home Show Twice a year, the estate agent subsidiaries of the big London housing associations assemble in the capital for the London Home Show. It’s a one stop shop for Shared Ownership (SO) flats. The problem is, SO is neither shared nor ownership. SHAC committee member Alison met up with other activists outside the venue, not just to protest but to inform too. She observed that the show was less well-attended than on her previous visit. Many people already had a sense that this tenure is not what the landlords promise, and all of our informative leaflets were snapped up by visitors. ![]() Read Here SHAC in the Press How a Charity Founded to Solve the Housing Crisis Became One of London’s Worst Landlords Andrew Kersley’s excellent, in-depth article for The Londoner charts the rise of Notting Hill Genesis (NHG), formed in response to brutal landlordism and slum conditions in London’s West End. But the social purpose that drove its success in the early days has now disappeared entirely, leaving it no better than the callous private landlords it sought to replace. The article has a wide resonance. NHG stands as a case study in a pool of similar large housing associations unable to resist the lure of big profits, diluting their compassion for the real meaning of social housing each time they merged. ![]() Sign Up Your Tenants & Residents Association If you are a member of a Tenants and Residents Association (TRA), please urge them to join almost 50 other TRAs and 10 campaign groups already lending their support to SHAC’s National Tenants and Residents Union project. We are working with trade unions to turn the vision into a reality, and aim to show that the concept has wide support: – Download the Campaign Group Statement here. – Add your TRA’s name here. If you’re not part of an officially recognised TRA but want to show support, you can still do so by getting together with a few neighbours, choosing a name for your group, and signing up with your support as an informal “TRA”. Alternatively, if you’d like to set up a formally recognised TRA, please see guidance in the Tenant and Resident Self-Organisation section of SHAC’s resources page. |
