Council Action on Sprinklers

Does your Council plan to install sprinklers in its residential blocks?

Tower Block

Waltham Forest Council does. It has committed a budget of £500k per year for 10 years to install sprinklers in the 64 blocks that it has identified as high-priority. These are made up of sheltered blocks, hostels, tower blocks, high rise and blocks with certain construction types such as where they have a wooden staircase. Work began in 2019 and up to 11 tower blocks or sheltered blocks should be completed by the end of 2020.

One of our members has emailed the London Assembly Fire Committee, Housing Committee and Mayor’s Office asking if the London Assembly has a plan to check if all London Councils are aiming to install sprinklers in their residential blocks and, if so, will the London Assembly Mayor, Fire or Housing Committee be overseeing progress on such work.

We will publish any replies received as and when we receive them.

ACTION Don’t hold your breath waiting to find out if your Council possibly has a plan. Email your own Council and MP to ask if they have a similar plan in place to install sprinklers. You can use the attached template letter and amend as you see fit for your purposes.
