He gives voice to the tenants and residents affected, many of whom are now on a service charge strike to provoke the council into making repairs and improving standards.  End Service Charge Abuse: Legal Project Update Earlier this year we appealed to the National Audit Office (NAO) to investigate systematic overcharging and potential fraud by landlords when taking payments in respect of service charges through welfare benefits payments. This month, the NAO decided not to proceed to a full investigation despite the evidence we presented. SHAC therefore met with our solicitors at the Public Interest Law Centre (PILC) to discuss next steps. We agreed to seek a barrister’s opinion on whether a legal challenge against the NAO’s decision was likely to succeed. We will update members once we have the barrister’s advice. More here. |

 Imran Khan & Partners Solicitors: Disrepairs Legal Project Imran Khan Solicitors contacted SHAC about their initiative to take on disrepairs on behalf of those with mould, leaks, damp or other housing related hazards leading to injuries or ill health. Imran Khan and Partners want to help residents target the institutional landlords responsible for these conditions. IKP said that they are: “helping groups of residents against the worst offenders in the sector to secure justice for tenants.” The firm highlights its 25-year track record fighting for the voiceless, including the victims of state racism such as notably the family of Stephen Lawrence, or those who have suffered from austerity such as Grenfell Tower victims. The claims will be funded on a “no win no fee” basis. This is because Imran Khan and Partners want to ensure that tenants can get access to justice.
