  1. Michael – seriously, thank you, I finally feel heard! Everything you have highlighted desperately needs to be made public knowledge. As tenants, we are voiceless and with no legal protection or transparency we are left completely vulnerable to these inflated and unfair service charges. This cannot continue. How can the very people who rely on affordable and safe social housing be exploited in this way? The government dictates fair rents to ensure social housing is affordable but ignores service charge amounts which go completely unregulated. My service charge bill for 25/26 is now £68 per week on top of my rent – this is not affordable!

  2. Unfortunately I have experienced this first hand despite my tenancy having a clause regarding a fixed service charge. It is strange how you mention 2016 that is when all the issues really escalated with Home Group. The matter of service charge inaccuracies and cuts happening prior, this is down to the Welfare Reform Act 2016-2020 where the reduction in rent of 1% per year was implemented and set out in 2012 regarding the settlement agreements regarding rent. This in turn allowed the issues of service charge abuse for tenants to escalate, at one point during this period Home Group charged rent but reduced the service charge to £3.18 or £5.00 to secure tenants with average increases of £25 per month. The total lack of justice for tenants has allowed this issue to continue and as you rightfully said the abuse on the public purse which I have mentioned to my M.P. current and previous. This has got to be the only bill people are forced to pay despite inaccuracies or paying for services never received and it does need to be reported in the context you have written and not just reference to leaseholders.

  3. Anchor Housing are the worst for service charges, they increase every year with no explanation … they are just a money gabbing horrendous company although they reckon they are a charity
